Imogen Bittner - Textile Landscapes

Description

There are several steps involved in building up a landscape which will be demonstrated and practised during this course and although in this particular workshop, we will be working on a tree in the landscape, these techniques can be adapted for different subject matter and sizes for future work. Working from sketches or photographs, a variety of media and techniques will be used; pencil/pen; watercolour; fabric and stitch. Beginning with a simplified linear drawing on the base fabric and enhancing with washes of watercolour, the background is further built up using transparent fabrics which will add a sense of depth and perspective to the work. Stitching, following the initial drawing, secures the fabric in place and simplifies the next stage of applique. Fabrics of different colour strengths and textures help to give a further sense of depth and distance to the work and this will be demonstrated and practised during the day. All materials are provided. Refreshments provided. please bring a packed lunch. We kindly ask that nuts are not brought into the studio because one of our staff has a nut allergy. Thank you. About Imogen "After graduating from West Surrey College of Art and Design, Farnham with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art (painting) in 1979, I moved to Norway and later France where I lived until returning to England in 2000. Here, I completed a PGCE in Art (secondary) at the University of Exeter and taught art in a male prison in Dorset for 10 years, being employed by Strode College, A4e and Weston College in this capacity. During this time, I studied for an MA in Fine Art (sculpture) at the Arts University Bournemouth, graduating in 2013. I have exhibited regularly since first graduating in 1979, both in solo and collective shows and have participated in several larger exhibitions such as the Ostlandsutstilling in Oslo, the Salon d’Automne at the Grand Palais, Paris, the SWA held in the Mall Galleries, London and the RWA in Bristol."
