Description

3 day watercolour course - Saturdays 10.30am - 3.00pm - Nov 21st, 28th, 5th Dec 2026 Give The Paint A Chance Most watercolour artists are ruefully aware that painting freely is much harder than it looks. The medium’s unpredictability should be an advantage, but all too often, the result is more mess than masterpiece. Counterintuitively, this can be the result of exerting too much control rather than too little. Using examples from the works of three great artists, who put their feelings at the forefront, we will look at how we can ‘Give the paint a chance,’ by taking the lead from our materials, rather than the other way around and respond not only to our emotions, but to what is happening on the paper in order to create lively, colourful, watercolour landscapes, that truly sing. This workshop is suitable for all abilities and for anyone with an interest in painting pictures that are less worthy, more risky and worth looking at! Week One - John Constable and the sky Week Two - John Marin and the seashore Week Three - Georgia O’Keeffe and the desert Materials required:- Basic set of watercolours (preferably tube colours) 4 small pots or dishes in which to mix colour No. 2, No.4, No.8 and 12 soft round brushes (soft nylon, sable or squirrel or mixed hair) 1” hake brush (or soft nylon, sable or squirrel or mixed hair) six A3 sheets of 140lb/300 gsm cold-pressed watercolour paper A4/A3 hardback sketchbook suitable for drawing and watercolour (e.g.Seawhite of Brighton) Some familiarity with watercolours would be preferable.
