3 day watercolour course - Saturdays 10.30am - 3.00pm - Nov 21st, 28th, 5th Dec 2026 Give The Paint A Chance Watercolour with feeling “Painting is but another word for feeling.” “Give the paint a chance. Give the brush a chance.” “Since I cannot sing, I paint.” John Constable (1776-1837) John Marin (1870-1953) Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) John Marin, one of the first American painters to embrace abstraction in the twentieth century, intuited that the key to painting with feeling lay with the brush in his hand and the gestures he made with it. In this practical, three-day course, spread over three weeks and beginning with John Constable, whose loose, painterly brushstrokes paved the way for Impressionism and Expressionism, we study the work and ideas of three artists for whom the human emotions were the most powerful tools in their watercolour kit box. Week One John Constable and the sky Week Two John Marin and the seashore Week Three Georgia O’Keeffe and the desert Materials required:- Basic set of watercolours (preferably tube colours) 4 small pots or dishes in which to mix colour No. 2, No.4, No.8 and 12 soft round brushes (soft nylon, sable or squirrel or mixed hair) 1” hake brush (or soft nylon, sable or squirrel or mixed hair) six A3 sheets of 140lb/300 gsm cold-pressed watercolour paper A4/A3 hardback sketchbook suitable for drawing and watercolour (e.g.Seawhite of Brighton) Some familiarity with watercolours would be preferable. Learners to bring their own equipment. We have some watercolour tubes in stock in our shop. (Course participants will be entitled to 10% off) About David Chandler David Chandler has been been teaching art to adults for over twenty years. He has lectured and demonstrated extensively to art societies in the UK and since 1999 and his practical book, 'Tate: Master Watercolour', has been translated into both Spanish and Korean. Parking Please note there is no parking directly at the venue. There is on-road parking in the road opposite or in The Avenue where there is a walk-way to the studios. Coldharbour pay and display carpark is a short walk. You are welcome to pull into the yard in order to unload before parking.
