Description

Extreme- Stitching: Cloth, Stitch and Paper. Themes Small Objects of Desire or Wild Gardens. An introductory workshop based on some of the artist’s personal approaches to creating mixed media works. We will use paper, textile combined with stitch to create pieces based on the ‘land’. Students will explore ideas related to design and the creation of textile papers (momigami), combine paper with fabric and look at different ways of texturing surfaces. A focus will be placed on hand stitching as an extension of mark making and drawing, and various means of layering. We will use photocopies, and build up images, textures and mix materials. You will have a small sample/piece at end of session. Broad outline of the workshop: Introduction. Techniques of distressing, layering, stitch which have been adapted from use in Japanese textile and paper crafts. Building up a range of papers to work with. Exploring ideas for working with the papers such as methods of layering, mark-making with hand stitch, tearing, building towards textured surfaces. Preparation required: Materials and equipment: Basic sewing equipment (scissors, threads, including pins). One waterproof felt pen. Apron. Selection of drawing media of your choice. Pencil crayons, Markers, wax crayons. Small amount of baby oil or cooking/olive oil. Pritt stick/glue stick Papers: Brown wrapping paper or large brown envelopes, tissue paper, Collect assorted waste papers from patterned paper bags, magazines, oriental specialist papers, sweet-wrappers, printed photocopy paper etc. Gathered scraps: Writing, prints, lace, scraps of cotton linen, silk fabrics with or without prints- various sizes. Useful to have - camera, pencil and notebook. Cas Holmes is one of UK's most renowned textile artists. She exhibits widely and runs courses at West Dean College in West Sussex. She is the author of Textile Landscape, Stitch Stories, The Found Object in Textile Art and Connected Cloth, also published by Batsford. She has also written for magazines and websites including Embroidery, The Quilter and Textile Artist and for the The Festival of Quilts. Trained in fine art, Cas’s work combines mixed media with found materials and stitch and is best described as ‘painting with cloth’. The history and familiarity of worn cotton, linen and paper mark the passing of time informing the narratives contained within the work.
