- Cas Holmes: The Sketchbook Workshop
Take the fear out of using a sketchbook. Learn creative ways of developing ideas through mixed media including dyeing and staining pages, drawing with found objects, stitching and layering.’ Using collage, colour, drawing and mark making in your sketchbook, you will develop your own ideas to achieve great confidence in composition, colour and design to reflect your own journey and interest. This three day online workshop will be delivered by Cas Holmes from 11am to 1pm on the 4th, 11th and 18th June 2025. Cas Holmes is one of UK's most renowned textile artists. She exhibits widely and runs courses at West Dean College in West Sussex. She is the author of Textile Landscape, Stitch Stories, The Found Object in Textile Art and Connected Cloth, also published by Batsford. She has also written for magazines and websites including Embroidery, The Quilter and Textile Artist and for the The Festival of Quilts. Trained in fine art, Cas’s work combines mixed media with found materials and stitch and is best described as ‘painting with cloth’. The history and familiarity of worn cotton, linen and paper mark the passing of time informing the narratives contained within the work. ‘For every artist, there is the what – what they make – and there is the why – the reason they are compelled to make. And then there is the place where these two converge to make art. Cas Holmes is fascinated by these zones of convergence in the making of art as well as in the concrete world that inspires it.’

- Beginners' Floral Batik - May 17th
Batik is a dyeing technique using wax resist. It is made by applying wax on a cloth to prevent colour absorption during the dyeing process. This creates a patterned negative when the wax is removed from the cloth. Resist dyeing using wax has been practiced since ancient times having been thought to have been developed in Indonesia. During the course of this workshop you will be provided with tuition that will equip you to create a beautiful design on the day. You will be given instruction and advice as to how you can use this amazingly versatile medium to its full potential. Techniques such as colour blending with the dye and other ways of using the wax, such as crackling, and over coating dye with wax in order to achieve stunning effects. You will first make a preliminary design on paper and we can discuss how to best achieve your vision. You can then practice using the tjanting tool to enjoy the flow of wax and the delicate movements of the hand with this amazing tool. Once you feel confident to begin your main piece of work you will attach your plain white cloth to a wooden frame and then let your creative juices flow! Once your batik has been completed and dried you shall take your cloth off the frame and iron off all of the wax. It shall then be stapled to a plain canvas. Materials included & cake, coffee & tea.
