Print & Stitch This workshop combines two skills, lino cutting and stitch to create a piece of textile art. In the morning we will carve a design onto a lino tile which we will then ink and transfer to fabric. In the afternoon we will embellish the design with stitches in embroidery threads and beads. August Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th 10.30-3.30 Have you ever wanted to record the world around you in a sketchbook but not known where to start? Then this is the right course for you! And Sherborne is the perfect town in which to learn. Whether you haven’t picked up a pen in decades or have had some experience of art tuition more recently you’ll gain from this introduction into a very mindful and immersive practice. Starting right at the beginning, our sessions will be packed with simple techniques and demos. We will explore ways in which you can begin a sketching habit with confidence. Drawing is the fundamental basis for all art and design. This workshop simplifies the principles of 2 point perspective to enable you to draw accurately. In this comprehensive extensive ten week course you will discover the art of hand embroidery, connecting your creative practice with art and design. Embroidery is the classic art of decorating fabric or other materials to create a myriad of beautiful hand stitched patterns. This course is suitable for any skill level, from beginner to advanced, because, due to small classes, it can be tailored to suit your ability. During the ten weeks you will produce a number of sample pieces to showcase a variety of techniques, and finish with a final design to create a traditional or innovative piece of work in the form of a wall hanging, a bag, a box or a textile item for interiors. You will be experimenting with a variety of fabrics, traditional and non-traditional, and a number of different variations of the basic stitches. Techniques such as fabric manipulation - pleating, tucking, gathering, burning, melting, slashing and creasing will be thoroughly explored. Also, how to use and add colour in the form of paint, fabric wax crayons, sponging and dyeing etc. will also be included, plus different forms of embellishment including beads, sequins and appliqué. Research into the historical contemporary and cultural aspects of embroidery design and key designer makers, plus looking at the compositional elements of line, colour, texture, shape and form, will inform your own design process and help you to develop your own style. TEXTILE DECORATION (7161 L2 203) Course will run weekly in term time, on Wednesdays 10.00AM - 3.00PM Starting January 6th 2027 This course takes you through the design process from research, to sample, to a finished one metre length of presentable decorated textile. We will discover so many varied and exciting ranges of fabric with different surface texture and weights, including natural, synthetic and man-made fabrics. Working in our sketchbooks to record and experiment with ideas, we will refine processes to develop and produce a minimum of ten individual samples using colour, line, texture shape and form in a variety of textile techniques. We will produce these samples using a range of colouring mediums including dyes, coloured wax, metallic, sprays, 3D mediums, paints and resists. We will also use a range of embellishments, beads, sequins, appliqué, stitch, slash, and other fabric manipulation. The production of these samples will also explore added pattrern, stencils, block prints, masks, stamps, batik and heat transfer techniques. Putting together your chosen preferred techniques that you have researched and practiced during this course, you will produce a one metre by the manufactured width of the fabric as one major sample. You can enter this sample into our end of year exhibition, if you choose to exhibit it. There is an option for formal assessment to gain credits than can go towards a Level 2 Certificate in Textiles. Course will run every Friday 10.00am - 3.00pm, for 14 weeks starting September 4th 2026 It is designed for learners who wish to gain skills and knowledge in the basic foundation elements of art to enable them to develop their skills and creativity in textiles, either for career progression in the textiles sector, or for those who simply want to expand their knowledge and skills for personal development. The classes are limited to a very small number of learners to ensure that everyone has enough tutor time. The course will be divided into two units, which between them allow the learner gain the foundation unit credits (7161 - 201/202). You will be working in sketchbooks to collate and develop your ideas. This foundation course will give you the creative underpinning you will need to expand your work with textile art. It looks at the elements common to all forms of art and will give you a solid base to take your work further. 1. 'Developing Design Ideas' involves experimenting with ideas using a range of craft materials, tools and equipment to develop a 3D form using 2D materials. We will look at the fundamental art elements colour, line, texture, shape and form. 2. 'Sampling Techniques for Textile Design' guides you to develop design ideas. and techniques for textile design producing a minimum of 7 design ideas in a style that are suitable for display to a client. Foundation course fee units 201 and 202 - £1330 Most materials are included although learners may wish to purchase more or different materials for their design ideas.
