Course will run weekly in term time, on Thursday starting January 8th 2026 10am - 3pm Suitable for beginners, those who are 'dabbling' and those already painting, who would like to explore a variety of painting techniques including oil, watercolour, gouache, and acrylic. - C&G Making Creative Journals (Unit 211)
MAKING CREATIVE JOURNALS. (7156. L2. 211) On Fridays 10am - 3.30pm Starting January 9th 2026 A Creative Journal is an innovative way of collating your personal thoughts, ideas and imagery. It is a place to practice your art and to hone your skills, and a place to combine your writing with your visual art. In this ten week course you will produce two journals – one will be a commercially available sketchbook (supplied by us) which you will adapt to create an individual journal, and the other will be a book that you will personally construct. Full tuition for book making and book binding will be an integral part of this course. You will be taught numerous techniques for paper and metal materials including tearing, layering, cutting, folding, weaving, distressing, foiling, leaf, wires, shims. You will explore colouring and texturising surfaces with piercing, joining, pleating etc. Block printing and repeat pattern, collage, 3D card structures, overprinting and collographs will all be explored to provide you with plentiful experimental techniques to include in your journal. Each journal will be based on a theme which will be informed by your research into historical, cultural and contemporary artists who specialise in making creative journals. This course can be undertaken with a view to gaining City & Guilds certification, or can equally be enjoyed simply for the practical skills that you will gain, without the need for assessment. It is not compulsory! (Please note there is an admin fee of £100 for formal assessment with City and Guilds payable at the end of the course with submission of work.) Course will run weekly in term time, on Thursday 10am - 3pm Starting 11th September 2025 Suitable for beginners, those who are 'dabbling' and those already creating and interested in filling in those foundation basics. This fantastic course covers the vital elements of art, including colour, line, shape, form, value, texture, space, and guides the learner through the processes of experimentation and planning, to produce a series of 6 designed samples covering many different techniques and media. Students will explore the use of a sketchbook to record and evaluate their experimentation. We will provide a wide range of art materials, and provide advice on starting your own collection of art supplies. Students on the course will have the opportunity to come to our drop-in sessions for free for practice and catch-up. At the end of the course participants have the option to put in for formal assessment with City and Guilds to obtain two units, (7156-201) Developing design ideas and (7156 - 202) Using sampling techniques for 2D and 3D work. Further study can lead to C&G Level 2 Certificate in Creative Techniques or Textiles. (Please note, if you would like to be formally assessed for the City and Guilds foundation units, there is an additional £100, not included in the course fee, which covers registration and assessment.) - C&G 10 week course - Printing Techniques
Course will run weekly in term time, on Wednesdays 10.00AM - 3.00PM Starting September 24th 2025 City & Guilds Unit 208 (7516) Using Printing Techniques This 10 week course looks at the material, processes and techniques to create prints. Processes include, monoprint, linocutting, drypoint and etching. Techniques include intaglio, and relief, screenprinting and collagraphs. We will cover the elements involved in print making, line, mark, layers, texture, tone and colour. Finishing with the design and production of 12 prints for an exhibition. Please note:- This course requires the learner to stand for a while, as screen prints are unable to be pulled sitting down. Also learners need to have sufficient strength and dexterity in their hands to carve a lino and hand print it. Refreshments provided, please bring your own lunch. Most materials provided. - C&G Foundation ART for Textiles 14 week
Course will run every Thursday 10.00am - 3.00pm, for 14 weeks. September 11th 2025 It is designed for learners who wish to gain skills and knowledge in the basic foundation elements of art to enable them to develop their skills and creativity in textiles, either for career progression in the textiles sector, or for those who simply want to expand their knowledge and skills for personal development. The classes are limited to a very small number of learners to ensure that everyone has enough tutor time. The course will be divided into two units, which between them allow the learner gain the foundation unit credits (7161 - 201/202). Further study of two other units, Textile Decoration (7161-203) and Hand Embroidery (7161-204) available as separate, bookable unit courses in term 2 and 3, will be needed to gain the full Level 2 Certificate. (Credits gained from all four units gain a City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Textiles) You will be working in sketchbooks to collate and develop your ideas. This foundation course will give you the creative underpinning you will need to expand your work with textile art. It looks at the elements common to all forms of art and will give you a solid base to take your work further. 1. 'Developing Design Ideas' involves experimenting with ideas using a range of craft materials, tools and equipment to develop a 3D form using 2D materials. We will look at the fundamental art elements colour, line, texture, shape and form. 2. 'Sampling Techniques for Textile Design' guides you to develop design ideas. and techniques for textile design producing a minimum of 7 design ideas in a style that are suitable for display to a client. Foundation course fee units 201 and 202 - £1330 Most materials are included although learners may wish to purchase more or different materials for their design ideas. - C&G 10-week course in Hand Embroidery
Course will run weekly in term time, on Mondays 10.00AM - 3.00PM Starting April 13th at our Sherborne studio. (Live online class available (UK only) including materials package - please email for details.) In this comprehensive extensive ten week course you will discover the art of hand embroidery, connecting your creative practice with art and design. Embroidery is the classic art of decorating fabric or other materials to create a myriad of beautiful hand stitched patterns. This course is suitable for any skill level, from beginner to advanced, because, due to small classes, it can be tailored to suit your ability. During the ten weeks you will produce a number of sample pieces to showcase a variety of techniques, and finish with a final design to create a traditional or innovative piece of work in the form of a wall hanging, a bag, a box or a textile item for interiors. You will be experimenting with a variety of fabrics, traditional and non-traditional, and a number of different variations of the basic stitches. Techniques such as fabric manipulation - pleating, tucking, gathering, burning, melting, slashing and creasing will be thoroughly explored. Also, how to use and add colour in the form of paint, fabric wax crayons, sponging and dyeing etc. will also be included, plus different forms of embellishment including beads, sequins and appliqué. Research into the historical contemporary and cultural aspects of embroidery design and key designer makers, plus looking at the compositional elements of line, colour, texture, shape and form, will inform your own design process and help you to develop your own style. This course follows the specification of the City & Guilds 7161- 204 and you have the option to be assessed for this qualification at the end of the 10 weeks - (additional fee £100) This course can lead to further courses and processes for fashion, couture, costume, textile art and interiors.
