    Drawing is the fundamental basis for all art and design. This workshop simplifies the principles of 2 point perspective to enable you to draw accurately. Most suited for drawings of buildings and other key elements of landscape, this workshop will teach you how to draw with accurate perspective. Once you have practised the basic rules you will be able to apply them to drawings and paintings. Plus you will be able to quickly check and identify any perspective 'mistakes' on work you produce. We will finish with producing a pen and wash drawing on watercolour paper. All materials provided. Refreshments included. Only 6 places to ensure maximum tutor contact time.   • Beginner's oil - 2 day course May 2025

    Oil painting techniques on two Tuesday afternoons in Sherborne An intensive course introducing painting in oil especially for those who have been putting off trying this fantastic medium. You will be guided through the stages of preparation and paint application. demystifying the medium of oil, and explaining the basic equipment needed. We will look at the main technique of alla prima, and practice painting wet on wet, scumbling and glazing. Looking at landscapes we will work towards at least one finished painting. Advice on colour mixing and composition will also be given along with tips on what to buy should you wish to continue. Oil is a versatile and forgiving medium which can be used in a variety of styles. This workshop is suited to beginners and to experienced watercolour and acrylic painters who are thinking of making the jump to oils. Small class of maximum 6 All levels welcome.   • Floral Landscape Embroidery 26/02/25

    Embroidery is an amazingly versatile way to decorate textiles. In this workshop you will learn the basic stitches that will equip you to create beautiful designs. No previous sewing experience is necessary. Taking time to hand stitch sample pieces, the key is to maintain regular stitch length and even tension. This way you will establish a rhythmic pattern of working that will support your style going forward with future projects. You will explore different fabrics and threads and how to apply them together create exciting dimensional stitched compositions.   • MIXED MEDIA 10 week course April 2025

    Course will run weekly in term time, on Wednesday starting April 30th 2025 Suitable for beginners, those who are 'dabbling' and those already painting, who would like to explore a variety of mixed media techniques. This fantastic course covers the vital elements of art including colour, line, shape, form, value, texture, space, and guides the learner through the processes of experimentation and planning, to produce and display finished art works. Students will explore the use of a sketchbook to record and evaluate their experimentation. We will provide a wide range of art materials, encourage different approaches to practice. With technical workshops coupled studio discussion, learners are encouraged to engage in the research of historical and contemporary practice to help inform and develop their own creativity. We will cover techniques** such as mono printing, fabric printing, paint, collage and cyanotype. At South West Art Courses, we keep group size small at a maximum of 6 learners. This ensures a high degree of teacher contact time. Our 10 week course, offers excellent value for money at only £950*.   • C&G level 2 Certificate Textiles

    Course will run every Thursday 10.00am - 3.00pm, for 3 terms. September 18th 2025- July 2026 South West Art Courses are pleased to be offering a fantastic opportunity to study the Level 2 Certificate in Textiles. It is designed for learners who wish to develop their skills and creativity in textiles, either for career progression in the textiles sector, or for those who simply want to expand their knowledge and skills for personal development. The classes are limited to a very small number of learners to ensure that everyone has enough tutor time. There will be 165 hours of studio time and an additional 2 hours (minimum) a week study or practice at home. The course will be divided into four units, which between them allow the learner to achieve the required number of credits to gain the certificate. You will be working in sketchbooks to collate and develop your ideas, which will be influenced by your research into historical, contemporary and cultural designer makers who specialise in textile design. We will be covering numerous techniques including fabric manipulation, dyeing, hand stitch and machine stitch, appliqué, embellishment, printing, slashing, colouring, beading, 3D mediums, stencils, batik, heat transfer and many more. 1. 'Developing Design Ideas' involves experimenting with ideas using a range of craft materials, tools and equipment to develop a 3D form using 2D materials. 2. 'Sampling Techniques for Textile Design' guides you to develop design ideas and techniques for textile design producing a minimum of 7 design ideas in a style that are suitable for display to a client. 3. 'Textile Decoration' teaches you to refine processes to develop and produce a minimum of 10 individual samples in a variety of decorative textile techniques leading to a final design in which you produce, and present a one metre length by the manufacturer's width of fabric, as a decorated piece. 4. 'Design and make a hand embroidered item' provides you with the practical skills and knowledge to produce an item of hand embroidery to a saleable standard using either traditional innovative techniques. At least 3 preliminary design ideas are produced for an item to be developed into a finished item. Course Fee £3950. Deposit 25% required at the time of booking. Payment plans are available.
